Acoustic Guitar Lessons Made Easy

Back in my early guitar playing days I would just listen to my songs over and over and strum away and not really get them completely right, but it would always be close. It wasn't until I decided to start playing the acoustic  guitar that I finally realized that lessons would be a very smart decision. There were a number of people in my community giving acoustic guitar lessons but I really didn't know who to choose and I didn't have a lot of money to waste on the wrong instructor.

There was a friend of my Dad's that he had played a little bit with back when they were in high school. He wasn't even sure if he was still around the neighbourhood or if he even still played the guitar. I decided to search him out and see. As luck would have it, he still was in the community and although he didn't play anymore, he knew of a great instructor that gave acoustic lessons.

After getting the number of this instructor and calling him up I was off to my first lesson. This guy played many classical guitar instruments and was apparently one of the best in town. I was really excited to get started and learn. Our first session was about 2 hours; he spent the first hour getting me properly oriented on my finger positions and threw a little theory in as well. The second hour was spent finger picking the "E" minor scale slowly all the way up the neck.

This kind of instruction was usually 2 days a week and was scaled back to 1 hour sessions after I learned enough theory to stick with the practical side of it all. It must have been about 10 months when I felt I could continue on my own and save some dollars. I had met a few other musicians by this time that I could sit around and jam with and we all kept learning from each other.

My recommendations if you're serious about learning any instrument would be to seek out a quality instructor that has some recommendations behind them from other people. You want to get it right the first time. I was fortunate to find the guy I did, and the rest is history.

Marvin Gordon: He was my first drum teacher. Remember him giving me my first music book with the cartoon that had a one word caption "COUNT!" Thanks for the memory!

I'd love to learn guitar. Used to play in the school band on drums and woodwinds, but never had the opportunity to play guitar.
