Pick Up Your Guitar And Learn Some Songs

Learning the guitar is a rewarding and fun filled adventure that will last a lifetime. Collecting guitars is also a fulfilling hobby that goes hand-in-hand with learning to play. Diligence, patience and commitment are the three main building blocks to becoming a great guitarist. Sure, being technically and musically gifted naturally will give an advantage starting out but that can matched with hard work and dedication.

Finding some easy guitar songs to play is a really important starting point for new players. Don’t try and bite off more than you can chew with a song like Master of Puppets or Angel of Death :-). Frustration and discouragement will only follow when you can’t play a song right away so pick some that are within your reach and make sure you use a metronome to play along with. Start the metronome at a pace where you can play all the notes cleanly and in the right rhythm and then you can speed up the tempo to match the original when you’re ready.

If you’ve got a guitar at home that sounds good acoustically as well as when plugged in then that’s all the better. Having a guitar that you can sit down and practice on whenever you feel like it without having to be plugged is a great advantage for a new guitarist. Don’t get me wrong, playing through an amp is very fun and inspiring but being able to practice at will is advantageous.

Some good old rock and roll songs that are fun to learn on are “Born to be Wild” *Steppenwolf”, “Smoke on the Water” (Deep Purple), and many songs from AC/DC and Black Sabbath. Straight forward beats and chord arrangements will be really fun for you to learn while getting the basics of rock music. There are many more from this era of music; the list is really endless. Just do a little research and get yourself some tabs to play and you’re all set.

For the long term of your musical journey, you should consider guitar lessons for the technical and theory aspect of it. Knowing why this note goes with that note, in my opinion, is vital for the big picture of music. Sure, there are some virtuosos out there that never learned a stitch of theory and are masters of guitar and music, but that’s not for everyone :-).

Just remember to practice and have fun. Take breaks when you start to feel a bout of frustration coming on so you can recharge. Don’t let a tricky part of a song discourage you. Just slow it down until you master the rhythm and then you’re all set to speed it up.

I've been looking at a new (used) guitar I got my hands on not too long ago thinking about finally starting to practice. Born To Be Wild will have to be on my to do list now.
